The kidlets learned that one better take extra care when securing the chicken coop/rabbit housing for the night as one Saturday morning the door of the area which houses the baby chicks and baby rabbits was pushed open and they were one chick short. They searched through the coop...nothing. That left the missing chick...outside. There are a few holes in the barn board walls that a little featherball just might fit through. It was a rather cold and rainy morning and we didn't know how long the chick may have been outside. Aside from the ground hogs, foxes, coyotes, wolves and bears that could have got to it....Codi was outside nosing around as well. The little chicks' chance of survival was virtually non-existent. Inevitably, the tears started flowing but we decided to do a search of the immediate area outside the coop anyways.

Matt was lured to a spot hidden from view by odd little noises coming from Codi. Something between a small bark and a grunt. Matt followed the sound and when he actually saw Codi...he was giving a very wet and dirty little chick puppy licks (taste-testing?) Well, either the doggie breath or Matt approaching sent the little chick scurrying into a hole in the ground. Trying to lure it out with food proved pointless so I ended up on my hands and knees reaching into the hole (praying that the chick would be the only find I'd make).

Well, I did get the little bugger out, we put her in the garage to dry out and warm up for a couple of house and she's just fine. Not the brightes light in the sky but very resilient.

Codi was pronounced hero of the day, got a few extra cookies and got to visit with the little chickeedo in the garage. WHY he didn't turn her into breakfast, nobody knows (afterall, chicken IS his favorite fruit! Maybe just the cooked kind, though?)
